• I was driving between Phoenix and Albuquerque on the 60.when I saw these satellite dishes. I recognized them from the movie “Contact.” What surprised me was that it was one of the few days it was open for tours. I learned that “The Very Large Array” consists of 28 dishes across this desert basin. They can be moved an positioned for different projects. (Magdalena, NM, 2005)

  • I read recently that the secret to seeing the Parthenon was to go early in the day. Somehow I was able to follow this advice long before I heard it–tourists were there, but the crowd was not overwhelming. (Rome, Italy, 2012)

  • It’s no secret that I love a good bridge–particularly if it has a good history. The Hungerford Bridge crosses the Thames near Waterloo Station and the London Eye. There have been several iterations of this bridge including the Charing Cross Bridge painted by Monet near the turn of the 20th Century. This striking version appears in a number of television shows and movies. (London, 2015)

  • I had a student from Seattle once and I used this image in class. I called on him to ask him some questions about Seattle and how it linked to the course topic. Evidently I took this from an angle he had never seen, because he did not recognize the city at all. (Seattle, 2015)

  • I was on a road trip in 2015 when I stumbled on Deception Pass and the Canoe Pass Bridge. I made an unscheduled stop to walk around get a few photos and walk across the bridge. (Whidbey Island, WA, 2015)

  • The Space Needle always reminded me of the Jetsons. My first time to see it and go up in it was in 2012. At the time I had hurt my knee and I was using a cane and I had a raging sinus infection. Despite the ailments, it was a fabulous trip. (Seattle, 2012)

  • I love walking along the Chicago River. Like most urban rivers, it used to be more industrial. As the city grew, it became a more interesting visual space. I was headed to some meeting when I grabbed this shot. (Chicago, Illinois, 2014)

  • Bella the Greyhound was seldom in the mood to try new things. It was hot that day and we wanted her to cool off her paws. She was very skeptical about it all and was a bit skittish about the high surf. She did get her paws in. (Kenosha, Wisconsin, 2014)

  • We had met a friend in Hoboken for breakfast. We just missed the ferry back to the City. We caught the next one. Why, yes, those are icicles on the boat. (Hoboken, New Jersey, 2019)

  • We had decided to watch the fireworks from the south shore of Milwaukee. While hanging out waiting for the show, the city looked magical. (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1986)
