When I’m asked about the winter darkness in Iceland I tell people that it looks the same as darkness anywhere else. It’s the daylight that becomes special. I took a lunchtime walk along the harbor in late December. It was unplanned. I had come out of a meeting and the city was just so lovely…

I was enjoying the dhow (boat) traffic. These are mostly used as tour vessels in region. At one time, they were fitted with sails and were the cornerstone of the pearl diving industry. (Doha, Qatar 2016)

If you have lived in the desert, you know that sunset brings that relief from the heat. Even though it was November and the weather was pleasant, the sunset this night brought cool breezes from the Gulf that felt glorious. (Doha, Qatar 2016)

We had decided to watch the fireworks from the south shore of Milwaukee. While hanging out waiting for the show, the city looked magical. (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1986)

Traveling to famous spots means crowds–but you can evade them a bit. Like most July days, Venice was overwhelmed with people. We wandered over a few bridges, and found a much quieter street with available seats for fine dining. It was a lovely and relaxing evening in our part of town. (Venice, Italy, 2011)

My first trip to Nicaragua was in 2003. Granada was a city that was being refurbished and renewed for tourists. The cathedral are the spires in the background had not been repainted with their distinctive yellow with melon-colored domes. (Granada, Nicaragua 2003)

Sometimes a great architect can make you “feel” a space. I spent at least an hour walking around this patio and fountains designed by I.M. Pei. The sun going down helped the experience as well (Doha, Qatar, 2016)

This is one of my favorite sunset shots, but it was just a quick shot without much planning or foresight–right place, right time. It was a “throwaway shot” that turned out well. (Honolulu, Hawaii, 2008)

I got invited by a colleague on a trip to measure snowfall in the Arizona mountains. On the way home, we flew over Sedona near sunset. (Sedona, Arizona 2005)

I was on a ship in the Hawaiian Islands waiting to get a good sunset shot (none were actually good). However this throw away shot turned out to be one of my favorites (Hawaii, 2008)
