If you have lived in the desert, you know that sunset brings that relief from the heat. Even though it was November and the weather was pleasant, the sunset this night brought cool breezes from the Gulf that felt glorious. (Doha, Qatar 2016)

We have had a lot of great meals in great places. A few of them rise above others. It was a beautiful little cafe with some fabulously prepared mussels. The meat and cheese to die for. Did I mention the bread? I would go back just to have that meal again. (Dubrovnik, Croatia 2012)

This is as close as I could get to the old ticket counter in the LA Train Station. This section is just used for events and filming. You can imagine what this looked like when train travel was at its peak in the US. (Los Angeles, California 2004)

We were flying to New York on an cold day. The ice on Lake Michigan was thick and the steam from the power plant was hanging in the sky below us. (Milwaukee, Wisconsin 2019)

I don’t remember how cold it was that day–but probably well below zero. Still Kathleen and I were out and about at the lakefront. The skyline looks very different today. (Milwaukee, Wisconsin 1985)

I had a student who had been working in Peace Corps in Nicaragua and we were trying to meet up when I was in the country. We could not find a time/place that would work so we gave up. I was out with my group and who walks into the restaurant with her boss–we got a chance to catch up on news before dinner. (Managua, Nicaragua 2007)

It was one of those moments in life you look back on and are happy you did ok. We knew we had to say thank you in Spanish (my Spanish has always been weak). I was a bit surprised when my group thrust the microphone in my hands and basically said “you got this.” I didn’t, but I did ok. (Managua, Nicaragua 2007)

It had been cloudy most of the day and the sun just peaked enough to cast some nice light on the canal and you can see the beams through the moisture. The rest of the shots didn’t turn out like this. This has been in my office for several years. (Utrecht, Netherlands 2019)

We took a day trip to Utrecht. It was such a pleasant and easy city to be in. I liked it so much a few years later I applied to present at a conference only because it was in Utrecht and I wanted to go back. I applied, presented, and had a great time again. This is from the first trip. (Utrecht, Netherlands 2019

We were looking for the Jesuit house that was listed in the guidebook. We wandered up and down stone stairs with very little that was visible until we came upon the stone carving in the wall. This was the place. I do love when a place is marked by a stone carving. (Dubrovnik, Croatia 2012)
