  • Definitely Sit at the Bar

This is probably one of my favorite restaurants in Kenosha. Every time I’ve been there, food is good, but the “feel” of the place is 1960s. The bar overlooks Lake Michigan. The only thing it is lacking is people smoking–that would make it complete. (Kenosha, 2016)

  • A Good Long Walk

I finally got my chance to walk across the Mackinac Bridge. It was a lovely day to walk across the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere. Great views, but don’t walk on the grate. (St. Ignace, Michigan 2014)

  • I Was Able to Get Work Done

I had a series of offices with terrific views–aside from the view it was quiet and comfortable. I got a lot of work done here. (Kenosha, WI, 2018)

  • Spring on the Canal

Kathleen and I took a spring break trip to the Netherlands. After that I was sold on cool weather spring break trips. (Amsterdam, 2019)

  • Right Place, Right Time

I got invited by a colleague on a trip to measure snowfall in the Arizona mountains. On the way home, we flew over Sedona near sunset. (Sedona, Arizona 2005)

  • Petrifying Springs

A quiet autumn walk through Petrifying Springs Park. (Kenosha, 2012)

When I was doing work with “water, urban development, and the West,” I wanted to visit the San Francisquito Dam which failed catastrophically in 1928. My colleague and I had each picked up a stray piece of concrete as a souvenir. Before we left we felt like we should just leave it behind with the…

  • What Happens When You Are Waiting for Sunset

I was on a ship in the Hawaiian Islands waiting to get a good sunset shot (none were actually good). However this throw away shot turned out to be one of my favorites (Hawaii, 2008)

  • Lazy Seals in the Bay

Whenever I see seals on the shore (or on the docks) I am amazed at their lack of need for personal space (San Francisco, 2003)

  • Part of my Dam Year

I was on sabbatical working at Arizona State and my research group was looking at water use in the Valley. I made a few trips to dams and Roosevelt Dam was my favorite (Tonto National Forest, 2004)
